自然界の幾何学的な法則の中に視た「美」と「理」。
2000年以降フランスを拠点に創作活動を行ってきたフォトアーティスト藤原更。独特の世界観を示す最新作『Neuma』は、東京で初めてのエキシビションとなった。
Neumaとは、中世の聖歌などの記譜に使われた記号のこと。タイトルから伺えるように、情報を削ぎ落とし事物を記号化して見るアプローチは興味深い。
藤原はこんこんと湧く源泉や複雑に交差する植物の連続性などに眼を向け、同時に自分の記憶を重ね合わせていく。
視る。そして自身との対話。抑制を利かせた彼女の写真は、自然の摂理の中に「美」或いは「理」の顕現を知る行為として、いつどんなときにも変わらない物事の筋道を知るための彼女独特の表現方法なのである。
写真は目の前に現れた現実を切り取る行為だ。藤原もセオリーに基づいて大判インスタントフィルムで写し、加工もしないリアルタイムな制作方法をとっている。作品『Neuma』のトーンは柔らかで一見抽象絵画と見まごうが、実はが、実は紛れもないストレートフォト。やわらかな色彩のこれら作品の中には、すべての事物はその理論によってのみ存在し、そこには一片のポエジーも介在させないほどの強さがある。今日の情勢には蜜のような甘いポエトリーは受け入れ難く、むしろ自然を自然たらしめるものとは何か？私たちにとってそのことの方がずっと重要な関心ごとだということを、藤原は確信しているようである。
「記憶」をテーマに自然を「記録」した藤原更の意欲作『Neuma』。記憶は時間の経過とともに都合よく変化しやがて怪物に成り得ることもあるだろう。そうだとすると記録とは、藤原にとって自分自身を映し出す鏡そのものである。
NEUMA: “BEAUTY” AND “ORDER” OBSERVED THROUGH THE GEOMETRIC LAW OF NATURE
Since 2000, photo artist Sarah Fujiwara has been working setting base in France. Fujiwara’s newest work, Neuma, displaying an original view, has become her first exhibition in Tokyo.
Neuma is a symbol used in the medieval hymn. As it is noticeable from the title, chipping off information and observing the object by symbolizing it is an interesting approach. Fujiwara shifts her attention to the source gushing out abundantly and the intersecting continuity of plants, simultaneously, casts her own memories to them. To see, and a conversation within the self; this controlled photography is her own method of expression to understand the unchanging state of matter and the manifestation of “Beauty” and “Order”.
A photograph is an act of clipping out the reality that is in one’s sight. Fujiwara, following this theory as well, chooses her method of creation to be shooting with an large-format instant film with no manipulation. The soft tone of the work, Neuma, could be seen as abstract art. This, however, is an
undoubted straight photo. With the soft tone of the work itself, Fujiwara’s work has also strength to show that every matter exists only by its theory, and there is no room for poetry.
A poetry sweet like honey is more unaccepted in today’s general context. If anything, what is it that makes nature as nature itself? Fujiwara seems to firmly believe that this by far is a greater concern for us.
Neuma is her ambitious work which “Record” nature under the theme of “Memory”. Memory, with the passage of time, may change to suit our convenience and finally someday, it could morph into a monster. If that is the case, memory is a mirror that reflects Fujiwara herself.
